I know you can’t expect as much performance from an iPhone, but nevertheless, I feel they could have done better. Out of the three, this is the most disappointing one by a clear mile.

Instead, better spend your money on a good joystick (as I did), so you can get the best flying experience possible.

For Mac at least, there is no need to spend hundreds on a flight simulator when there is great free one on offer. What’s more, because it is open source, it is completely free, which is awesome. While it does run on my 2007 Macbook, it is pretty sluggish at times, so I would recommend having something with good graphics and processor. Performance wise, as with everything, the faster your Mac the better.

Rather like a pizza, you download the base, and then you can add whatever toppings you want to suit your fancy. It is infinitely expandable, with many different aircraft available to download from the official site, as well as terrain and airports. The main reason this is so great is that it is completely open source. Let’s take a look at one of the best for each platform, Flightgear (Mac), X-Plane (iPhone) and F-Sim Space Shuttle (iPad/iPhone). What’s more, with the appearance of iOS, this category of game has been transitioned to mobile devices, with considerable success. If you have about $50 or so and can't afford anything more than that these older HOTAS models are your best choice. While the classic flight simulator is perhaps slightly less mainstream today than it was several years ago, there is still a huge audience for them. Saitek sticks are not known for their robustness so if you take good care of it and not abuse it then the X45 should last you a long while, or at least until you can save for something with more options. You can find workarounds, the pinky trigger on the flight stick allows you to set all kinds of alternate controls in Elite Dangerous adding more functionality to the stick and throttle that otherwise would have. The flight stick does not twist for yaw control and the throttle does not have an analog stick like the Thrustmaster T16000 which is almost essential for landing and combat flight maneuvers in Elite Dangerous. The X45 is great for those not wanting to pay that much, but you make a few sacrifices. You can easily spend $1,000 on a flight stick, throttle, and foot pedal setup for flight sims and Elite Dangerous. For a modern setup, you'll pay a premium with the cheapest starting at $100 (Thrustmaster T16000) and the price goes up "significantly" from there. The Saitek X45 Flight Stick and Throttle is an outdated model by today's HOTAS standards, but it is the best you'll find if you're on a budget. The device works with Microsoft Flight Simulator X and can also be used on a MacBook Air that has a USB port for connectivity. Despite its significant size, however, it fits comfortably in the hand and possesses an ergonomic quality that won't tire your hand as you play. The HOTAS is incredibly realistic and adds major fun to games like "Elite Dangerous." The dimensions of the unit are 14 inches by 9.8 inches by 8.9 inches, making the device even more realistic. As a detailed throttle and stick peripheral, it heightens the effect of aeronautical-themed play. A pinkie switch is included on this flight stick as well. There is also a missile launcher, throttle control with detents, rudder control, and two eight-way hat switches. Each button is highly responsive and delivers the intended action without delay, allowing you to complete search-and-destroy missions with ease. The Saitek X45 has four fire buttons on the joystick with an additional two on the throttle, making it easy to switch back and forth between the two as needed for intense, rapid-fire action.

One of the primary drawbacks of using a PC to play is that a keyboard and mouse don't encourage the dexterity that is often required. This joystick also has an auto-configuration capability that is useful in completing the set-up on your preferred simulator.

A host of onboard features and advanced software allow you to configure a vast number of custom options for each game. The Saitek X45 features authentic aeronautical styling that mimics the controls of an actual aircraft.

Designed for use on the Windows operating system like Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, or XP and compatible with DirectX 8.1, this piece of video gaming hardware will add hours of enjoyment to your video game sessions. The Saitek X45 (J24C) Flight Stick might be just what you need to get an edge with PC flying simulators or first-person shooters that feature a lot of flying action.
